Vaishali is small town in the east state Bihar of India which is showing the past histories of the state. The epic Ramayana tells the story of the heroic King Vishal who ruled here.
Vaishali city located in the Bihar, which is far from capital city of Bihar, Patna at the distance of 55 km. Vaishali extends from latitude 25 degree in the North to longitude 85 degree in the East.
Vaishali is important place for both Buddhists and Jains. Vaishali has taken its name from King Vishal of Mahabharata age. It is the birth place of Lord Mahavira. The father of Mahabharata was King Siddhartha and his mother Trisha was the sister of the King Chetaka of Vaishali.
It is said that Buddha visited this place and quite a long time and delivered his sermon and announced his Nirvana here. It is also famous as the land of Ambapali, the great Indian dancer is related to many folktales. Ambapali was a beautiful and talented courtesan, who later took sanyas to follow the path of the Buddha.
Fairs and Festivals
Birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira is the most famous Mahotsav or festival in Vaishali which is come in mid of April; it celebrates with customs and tradition. Asia’s largest cattle fair, the Harihar Kshetra Mela, which hosts by the town of Sonepur, from 35 km distance from Vaishali city.

Ashokan Pillar- Emperor Ashoka built the Lion pillar at Kalhua. It is made of a highly polished single piece of red sandstone, surmounted by a bell shaped capital, 18.3 m high. A life-size figure of a lion is placed on top of the pillar.
Bawan Pokhar Temple– it is built during the Pala period stands on the northern bank of a tank known as Bawan Pikhar and enshrines beautiful images of several Hindu gods.
Shanti Stupa- Shanti Stupa is the most attractive place is Vaishali which define the place of peace. This monument, built on the south bank of the coronation tank, is one of the highest in the world and has been built in collaboration with Japanese government.
Best time to Visit
The best season to visit Vaishali is winter season because the summers are hot with maximum temperature and in winter temperature can go down. The best month October to March.
How to Reach
By Air- Patna airport is nearest to Vaishali which is far from 55 km from it.
By Rail- the nearest railhead is Hajipur, at the distance of 35 km from Vaishali city and it connected with major cities by regular trains.
By Road- there are regular buses for Patna and other cities of Bihar from Vaishali. Road are the suitable means to reach Vaishali.
