Tourism in Khajuraho

Khajuraho is the famous for its attractive sculpture, wall carvings in the state of Madhya Pradesh of central India. Standing against the backdrop of Vindhyas, Khajuraho are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is the most beautiful medieval monuments in India. Originally a group of 85, they are the largest group of Hindu and Jain temples in the world, although only about 25 of them remain today.


Khajuraho is situated in the forested plains of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in the region known as Bundelkhand. The place is at a considerable distance from most cities and town centres of the state.


Khajuraho was built by Chandela rulers in 9th and 10th century AD. It is presumed that every Chandella ruler built at least one temple in his lifetime. One noteworthy ruler was Maharaja Rao Vidyadhara, who repelled the attacks of Mahmud of Ghazni. His love for sculptures is shown in these temples of Khajuraho and Kalinjar fort.Out of 85 temples, only 20 have survived the ravages of time. Made of sandstone blocks fitted together, the temples are aligned east-west. For convenience, these may be divided into western, eastern, and southern groups of temples.

Fairs & Festivals

Mahashivratri is the most important festival in Khajuraho which is celebrated with proper customs. This is symboling Shiva’s marriage with Parvati on every Mahashivratri. On this festival the 2.5m tall lingam of Kandariya Mahadeo temple is dressed as a bridegroom, with white and saffron dhotis, and surmounted by a huge, conical, silver paper crown.Khajuraho Dance Festival is one of the most acclaimed events in the travel itinerary of India. It is held annually at Khajuraho, one of the most magnificent tourist destinations of India.

Tourist Attractions

Khajuraho is famous for its sculptures temples, art of Khajuraho.

Chitragupta Temple- this temple is dedicated to Lord Surya. The front of temple is lies at the east side and enshrined the five ft high idol of Lord Surya in standing positive driving a chariot of seven horses.

Kandariya Mahadev Temple– it is the beautiful and largest temple in Khajuraho. It built by sandstone and dedicated to Lord Shiva. This was built during 1025 to 1050 AD. The temples structure contains Ardhamandapa, Mahamandapa with several beautifully carved pillars, Prdakshina and Garba Griha.

Lakshmana Temple- build by Chandela kings, Lakshmana Temple is one of the first magnificent structures established in Khajuraho.

State Museum of Tribal and Folk Art set in Chandela cultural complex, the state Museum of tribal and folk art in Khajuraho is an ideal place for history lovers. The museum showcases a vast collection of masterpiece that is symbolic of the rich culture of the region.

Places around Khajuraho

Benisagar Lake is a tourist spot around 7 km away from Khajuraho. There is a dam on Khudar River and is an ideal place for boating and angling.

Panna is a historical city and was the capital of Bundela kingdom.

Ranguan Lake is 20 km from Khajuraho. This is a site at the confluence of Ken and Simri rivers.

At the foot of Maniyagarh hills is Rajgarh Palace. This palace is around 50 years old and 25 km away from Khajuraho.

Best time to Visit

For visiting in Khajuraho, between the months of July to March is the best time. Summers in the city are warm days; heated weather does not let you enjoy the sights. Monsoon is a pleasant time. Moderate rains are available for few days in the season. The lovely months of October to February are the good as crowds from all over the world visit.

How to Reach

By Air- Khajuraho airport is a well-connected domestic airport in India. From the airport the city is a km distance away.

By Rail- Khajuraho railway station is connected to few cities. Mahoba is the nearest major railhead which is 63 km away. From this railway station, trains from all over India are accessible.

By Road- Khajuraho is well connected by extensive road network. The main highway is National Highway Number 75, which falls en route to the town.
