In today’s times, we find the buzz of learning drifting towards cognitive learning. Cramming up facts and figures is passe. One might wonder as to how should we improve our cognitive learning. But before we do that, let us first define cognitive learning. It is learning that is concerned with the acquisition of problem-solving abilities and with intelligence and conscious thought. cognition describes a person’s typical mode of thinking, perceiving, remembering, or problem-solving. Cognitive style is usually described as a personality dimension which influences attitudes, values, and social interaction.

researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found evidence that physical activity is beneficial for brain health and cognition. The study found that certain hormones, which are increased during exercise, may help improve memory. Also, Exercise increases blood flow to the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for memory.  All in all, exercise is your sure shot gateway to improved cognitive learning so what are you waiting for?

Openness to Experience.

An enhanced cognitive learning comes when you actively engage with your surroundings instead of taking refuge in your shell. A study from October 2013 titled, “The Impact of Sustained Engagement on Cognitive Function in Older Adults: The Synapse Project” found that learning new and challenging skills while maintaining an active social network is key to staying sharp as we grow older. The findings tell that less challenging actions like listening to classical music or simply completing word puzzles probably doesn’t provide noticeable benefits to an aging mind and brain.

Active engagement with new hobbies.

A new hobby isn’t just a great way to have fun, you will also end up improving your cognitive learning! Take up a new hobby that requires learning, as opposed to merely attending a basketball game or a rock concert. It can be gardening, antiquing, taking up an instrument, learning a foreign language or selling items on the Internet. Read books, talk to experts, take classes, attend conferences or join organizations related to your hobby. All of this learning activity develops new connections between neurons, which helps offset cell loss due to aging or disease.

Social engagement.

It is not just great for feeling positive and happy but also develops your cognitive learning in the long run. Feeling isolated can actually cause health hazards and result in cognitive decline. disrupt sleep, elevate blood pressure, increase morning rises in the stress hormone cortisol, alter gene expression in immune cells, increase depression, and lower overall subjective well-being. all of these factors conspire to disrupt optimal brain function, connectivity and reduce cognitive function. So stay socially engaged and surround yourself with people who make you happy. In fact, the brain changes associated with meditation and subsequent stress reduction may play an important role in slowing the progression of age-related cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

Puzzles, games, and crosswords.

Puzzles are an outstanding way to build new connections in the brain. There are many types of puzzles other than crosswords. These include acrostics, cryptograms, acrostics and many other word-oriented brain teasers. Some brain teasers don’t involve words at all, such as Sudoku. It’s particularly good for your brain to seek out a variety. Or start with one type, and as you get better, switch to another type of puzzle. Get enough sleep.

It is sleep that helps your body heal and relax. It enhances our learning and memory and is essential for proper functioning of the brain. Poor sleep quality disrupts learning and leaves us feeling lethargic. Various studies have proved the health benefits associated with sleep.
