Rameshwaram is a popular tourist destination in Tamil Nadu. It is considered as a holy place of country and also one of the four dhams of Hinduism. Rameshwaram is an island of Lord Rama’s temple; it is a happening holiday spot too.


Rameshwaram located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 km from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka.


It is said that, this is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka. Owing to this Rameshwaram attracts Vaishnavites and Saivites alike. Sri Lanka is at a distance of 24 km from Rameshwaram.

Ramanathaswamy Temple– A must visit pilgrimage for both the Vaishnavite as well as the Shaiva sect of Hinduism the temple constitutes a major part of the popular spiritual tourism destinations in India.

Adam’s Bridge– Adam’s Bridge or Rama Setu is considered as a historic bridge that connects Rameshwaram island of India to north-western coast of Sri Lanka. It is a chain of limestone shoals from Dhanushkodi tip of India’s Pamban Island.

Water Bird Sanctuary– apart from temples of Rameshwaram, there are also interested sites which is attract to tourist towards the town. Water bird sanctuary which is certainly different from the conventional sanctuaries. There are lot of native as well as migratory water birds in this sanctuary.

Down south the island of Rameshwaram is Dhanushkodi. The place derived its name from the dhanush or bow of Lord Rama and is believed to have been the starting point of the bridge that was built by the monkey forces of Lord Rama to access Sri Lanka.

Best time to Visit

The climate of Rameshwaram is tropical over the year. Best time to visit between the months of October to April. This is the time when the weather is extremely pleasant and is ideal for sightseeing as well as water sports. In the summers, weather is hot and humid and temperatures reach 38 degree C. In month of July, that is rainy season and it ends in September.

How to Reach

By Air- Madurai is the nearest airport from Rameshwaram, which is 163 km away from the town.

By Rail- Rameshwaram railway station is well connected and has regular train to Rameshwaram from other major cities of the country.

By Road- there are regular buses from other cities of the country to Rameshwaram.
