If you are born poor it’s not your mistake, but if you die poor it’s your mistake. – This is one of my most favorite quotes from Bill Gates. A man who needs no introduction and whose success is an inspiration to everyone throughout the world. Bill Gates has a multitude of talent- he is a business magnate, investor, philanthropist, and co-founder of Microsoft, the world’s largest PC software company.
What is his success story?
Bill Gates understood that achieving goals requires hard work and dedication. He also believes that if you are intelligent and know how to use your intelligence, you can reach your goals and targets. From his early days, Bill was ambitious, competitive and intelligent. But he didn’t succeed immediately. Even his life was full of setbacks and obstacles. The founding years of Microsoft were tough on Bill as such situations are prevalent in the business sphere. He came across pressing situations and a few bumps along the way that could have made anyone quit. These hellacious circumstances, disappointments and lots of mistakes mixed with failure didn’t deter Bill Gates. As the vast majority of great achievers would, he viewed failure and mistakes as an opportunity to learn something new and develop his expertise. And we all must learn from this. We must always keep trying harder. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes you’ve made or the number of obstructions you’ve run into, persistence never goes unpaid. Learn from your mistakes and pick yourself up afresh.
And while you are at it, do not get distracted by your success. Bill’s numerous achievements have placed him at the top of the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Even with such record of success, Bill Gates doesn’t seem undeterred by his exceptional accomplishments. After choosing to step down from the top executive seat at Microsoft, Gates is still very much in business as he is currently heading both Cascade Investment and Branded Entertainment Network. Therefore, what we can learn from this is to not allow past success make us lose focus. Progress should be a continual process. There is no dearth of things to learn, our thirst for knowledge should be insatiable.
Another reason for his massive success is the value he places on time. He understands the wisdom in properly arranging tasks that are more likely to yield the most productive results of time spent. Gates once said, “No matter how much money you have, you can’t buy time.” With his many years of experience as an entrepreneur, Gates has mastered the art of prioritizing and maintaining focus only on commitments that matter to him the most. He might not attend a meeting he doesn’t deem important, but would rather take the time to communicate with the people closest to him. Time spent injudiciously can never be gotten back. Therefore make it your utmost goal to enjoy the time you have by spending it on tasks/people that matter most to you.
Another motto of his life is “if you don’t build your dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs.”
This is the most important lesson one can learn from him. If you have a dream, get working on it today! Don’t wait for the perfect time, perfect circumstances etc. There exist none. The right time is now. Gates was only 13 when he started experimenting with computers. When you start something early enough, you immediately start developing your mastery on that subject. So take that leap of faith and you’ll fly.
Lastly, add value to the lives of those who are not as blessed as you. In the words of Bill Gates, “I’ve been very lucky, and therefore I owe it to try and reduce the inequity in the world. And that’s kind of a religious belief. I mean, it’s at least a moral belief.” Bill Gates is as generous and giving as he is wealthy and successful. Gates is investing a big part of his fortune in making the world a better place for the poor. He saved over 5 million lives by bringing vaccines and improving children healthcare; throughout his life, he donated half of his current worth; he invested in a foundation that supports many health, social and education developments, and the list goes on.
So connect with your dreams and jumpstart your career by doing something you love. Wish you luck!
