Having a great resume and the necessary talent set is just not enough these days. For acing an interview, it is important to be well prepared and be on your best behavior. However, as important it is to know what to do, it is equally essential to know what mistakes to avoid.

Here are 9 interview mistakes to avoid.

(1) Being ill-prepared: Being confident during the interview is a by-product of being well prepared. You must approach a job interview as you would a test. It’s imperative to study detailed information about the company where you’re applying so you’re ready to talk about how your skills are a good fit for its business. Research well and show the recruiters what sets you apart!

(2) inappropriate outfit: if you show up to your interview looking too informal or disheveled, you will make a bad impression before you even introduce yourself. It is important to dress formally when going for an interview.

(3) Impunctuality: Here is why it is recommended to arriving a few minutes early (at least 10 minutes before the interview is scheduled)- It proves that you’re organized, reliable and eager. It also lets you take some time to compose yourself. You can use the restroom and prepare for the approaching conversation.

(4) Using your phone: This one is a no-brainier. Taking a look at your phone in the midst of an interview may come across as impolite or suggest you’re easily distracted. Before you go into the interview room, turn off your devices and store them out of sight. Use a pen and a paper notebook to take notes.

(5) Asking random questions: Don’t ask anything that portrays ignorance of the company’s basic information. If it’s available on the website, you are expected to know about it.

(6) Badmouthing previous employers: This one is a big no! Doing so reveals a bad attitude. Your interviewer will instantly wonder whether you’d talk about her and her company that way if she hired you.

(7) Being too personal: Conversing in a friendly tone is nice, but it’s important not to cross a line by sharing too much personal information. Remember, you never know how your potential employer will react to a story about your weekend antics. Use your limited time with the interviewer to show why you should be chosen over the rest. Stay focused on your professional accomplishments and the company’s needs.

(8) Discussing compensation too soon: Job candidates must never bring up the topic of salary first. This is because it puts them in a weaker negotiation position. Furthermore, talking about it too soon may give the impression that you’re only interested in the job for its perks. Save this conversation for after you’ve been offered the job.

(9) Poor body language: Communication goes beyond words. Keep in mind that it is important to make eye contact while listening and speaking. Also, you must offer a firm handshake and sit with good posture. And whatever you do, do not channel your nervous energy into fidgeting.
