Tourism in Sanchi

Sanchi is famous for its great stupa. Sanchi stands in testimony to the golden Buddhist age of Emperor Ashoka. Today Sanchi is synonymous to the masterpieces of Buddhist art revealed in the age-old Stupas, monasteries, temples, and monolithic pillars.

Location

Sanchi situated in Madhya Pradesh, distance from its capital Bhopal is just 46 km in the east. Sanchi is situated over a hillock and in the ancient times was addressed to as Kakanaya, Kakanava, Kakanadabota and Bota-Sriparvata.

Tourists Attractions

Great Sanchi Stupa- the oldest stone structure in India, 36.5 m in diameter and 16.4 m high, and with an enormous hemispherical dome, the Stupa stands in perpetual splendour, the paved procession path around it.

The Gupta temple- The Gupta Temple adorns the intermediate layer. Make sure to visit this Gupta temple no.17 which has stood the test of time.

The Museum at Sanchi- the archeologically survey of India maintains a site museum at Sanchi. Noteworthy antiquities on display include the lion capital of the Ashokan pillar and metal objects used by the monks, discovered during excavations at Sanchi.

Place around Sanchi

Vidisha city far from Sanchi at a distance of twelve kilometres. Vidisha was also referred to as Besnagar since it was located on the confluence of the Betwa and the Bes rivers. It is noteworthy that the wife of Ashoka was from Vidisha.Then there are the Hindu and the Jain caves that run in succession at Udaigiri. The rock cut cave sanctuaries of Udaigiri are world-renowed. Both the places are of much historical interest. The caves carry captivating carvings of Lord Vishnu.The trip to Sanchi will surely be enjoyable that will offer you a deeper insight into the rich cultural, architectural and religious heritage of India.

How to Reach

By Air- At a distance of 46 km at Bhopal is the nearest airport of Bhopal that connects Sanchi with the other major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Gwalior and Indore.

By Rail- the railways station of Vidisha caters to the tourists who travel by trains. The railhead of Vidisha is at a distance of 10 km from Sanchi.

By Road- The road network links Sanchi with Indore, Sagar, Gwalior, Raisen et al. From Bhopal the capital city of Madhya Pradesh several buses and taxis ply to and from Sanchi.
