Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram is the largest city in Kerala. It is famous for its seaside, spices, sandalwood, ivory etc. a long shoreline with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought after tourist destination. It is the capital of Kerala and it is very clean and has greenery in the city.

Location

Thiruvananthapuram is situated in southern India state in Kerala. It is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the west and Tamil Nadu in the east.

History

The name of city is derived from the name of deity at the Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswami Temple. This temple is known as the landmark of the city.  The words Thiru-Anantha-Puram, meaning the town of Anantha.This city was a trading post for spices, sandalwood and ivory in 190 AD. The early rulers of the city were the Ays and after their fall in the 10th century, the city was captured by the rulers of Venad.

After shifting the capital from Padmanabhapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thiruvananthapuram was made the capital in 1745. After independence when the state of Kerala was formed on 1 November 1956, Thiruvananthapuram became its capital.

Fair and Festivals

Classical Music Festival is celebrated from January 27 to February 3 every year and is a great to enjoy for the lovers of pure classical music forms such as karnatic and Hindustani music.

Tourist Attractions

This city is very famous for its landmark place, Padmanabhaswami temple. It is one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples or Divya Desams in India. It was the holiest abodes of the Lord Vishnu that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhvars.

Napier Museum is very popular for its art and beautiful history pictures. It contains many arts Gallery which displays works by Nicholas Roerich and Raja Ravi Verma. It also has rare bronze idols, temple chariots, and ancient ornaments and ivory carvings on display.

The city is famous for its historical palace;

Kowdiar Palace is the official residence of the Travancore Royal Family that ruled over Travancore until 1947. It is famous for its architecture work and it has 150 rooms in palace.

Apart from these, there are number of interesting things to do there such as boat-ride on its enchanting backwaters.

Best time to Visit

The climate of the city is pleasant over the year. The maximum temperatures go up to 36.2 degree C and minimum go down 18.0 degree C in summers. The best months October to March to visit the city.

By Air- Trivandrum International Airport has own airport which is well connected with major cities of India as well as world includes Colombo, Maldives, Singapore etc.

By Rail- Thiruvananthapuram railway station has direct train to all the main town of Kerala as well as Major cities of India.

By Road- long distance buses available from the Central Bus Station at Thampanoor. The city is well connected to place around the city by road.
